The Illuminated Heart Undead Fairy Tales eBook Thea van Diepen

Dagný’s only brother, Kaj, is dead. He died of illness before his life had really begun, and Dagný blames God for it.
About a week after his death, Kaj comes back as a draugur, a creature intent on the ruin of those it had known in life. With his unholy power, he kills their crops, causes their animals to go insane, and brings them to the brink of starvation. Every single member of Dagný’s village, convinced that her family has brought this curse upon themselves through sin, leaves them alone to die.
Then, one day, a polar bear arrives at their door with a proposition
“Give me your youngest daughter, and I will make you wealthy.”
The adventure that follows thrusts Dagný into a world where the supernatural intrudes on the natural as a matter of course, where she must act without any assurance of safety, and where she must decide whether to throw away all she’s believed or finally trust in it for the first time.
The Illuminated Heart Undead Fairy Tales eBook Thea van Diepen
East of the Sun and West of the Moon isn't the best-known fairy tale, but it's so underrated. Thea van Diepen proves that with this retelling, throwing in her own villain and mixing in her Christian beliefs. This story is so original and I connected with Dagny right away. Dagny has heart, courage, and she questions the supernatural events around her. She's real. I especially like the undead villains. I think they're better than the original fairy tale. Well done, Thea!Product details

The Illuminated Heart Undead Fairy Tales eBook Thea van Diepen Reviews
I'm a cynical, crotchety atheist and was ready with all my crotchety cynicism on starting this read.
It melted me. The prose is simple and beautiful, it reminds me of Robin McKinley's mastery of fable language. It is the perfect book for a dark night and warm blanket. It does read simply and swiftly - in fairy tale style - it's short but all of its pieces are finely crafted and waste no time.
I think this is as much as I could ever love a story of faith.
This author took a few different elements-- a folklore tale, zombies, a new location, and her own experiential landscape-- and has crafted a great little story. I liked the characters, the action moved right along, and the right mood was set for a grand fairy tale-type story. I like the inspiration that can be taken from it, even if it means that the main character has conversations with God. It's touching and compelling. Might be even better with illustrations to continue the cover theme!
If you've read the original folk tale of East of the Sun, West of the Moon, you know this tale is something only very young kids would believe or like. Plot holes and over simplistic explanations make it difficult for an adult to enjoy.
Thea's adaptation of this tale goes far to fill in those plot holes with some great plot twists. She makes you wait until the end of the story to "get" the understanding of her explanations, but that's what makes you want to read the whole book without putting it down.
There's a lot of promise in this short story. I think as Thea's career evolves and her writing continues to grow, she should come back to this story again. It's great as a short story, but I see a LOT of potential here for this story to become a full length novel.
I look forward to reading more works by this author.
I expected a so-so zombie story, but with a polar bear and Iceland in the tale, I had to give it a look. I'm so glad I did, because this is a tale of faith and trust. So worth it to read!
